What is TDEE

Total Daily Energy Expenditure

TDEE is the sum of all the energy your body uses in a day. Resting energy, spent on breathing and keeping your body warm, is the largest share, and movement, exercise and the energy it takes to digest food add to it. If you eat less than your TDEE your weight tends to fall, and if you eat more it tends to rise, which makes TDEE the baseline for cutting, maintaining and gaining weight.

Resting energy (BMR) Energy used by breathing, body temperature and organs even when lying still 60–70%
Activity energy Walking, chores, exercise — anything that moves the body 20–30%
Thermic effect of food Energy used to digest and absorb what you eat About 10%
Shares are rough values for a typical adult

How it is calculated

Mifflin-St Jeor + activity factor

First the resting energy (BMR) is worked out from sex, age, height and weight, then it is multiplied by an activity factor to get TDEE. The BMR equation is the Mifflin-St Jeor formula published in 1990. Among formulas that do not need a body-fat measurement, it is reported to stay close to measured values, which is why it is widely used in clinical and nutrition settings.

Male BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5 Female BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161 TDEE BMR × activity factor
Activity Criteria Factor Sedentary Mostly sitting, little or no exercise ×1.2 Light Light exercise 1–3 days a week ×1.375 Moderate Moderate exercise 3–5 days a week ×1.55 Active Hard exercise 6–7 days a week ×1.725 Very active Twice-a-day training or physical labor ×1.9

If you enter inches and pounds, they are converted to cm and kg before calculating. Even with the same inputs, real expenditure can differ by 5–10% with muscle mass and lifestyle, so treat this number as a starting point and adjust it as you watch your weight over 2–3 weeks.
