Pace and speed

Pace / Speed

Pace is the time it takes to run one km (or one mile), and speed is the distance you cover in an hour. They describe the same thing upside down, so a smaller pace and a bigger speed both mean faster. Runners tend to prefer pace because a glance at the watch at each km tells you right away whether you are ahead of or behind plan.

Speed Divide 3600 by your pace per km in seconds 5:00 /km → 12.0 km/h
Mile pace One mile is 1.609344 km, so multiplying your km pace by 1.609344 gives your mile pace 5:00 /km → 8:03 /mi
Finish time Multiply pace by distance. The half uses the official 21.0975 km and the marathon 42.195 km 5:00 /km → 3:30:59
Sub marks Finishing the marathon under that time. Sub-3 needs 4:15, sub-3:30 4:58, sub-4 5:41 and sub-5 7:06 /km or faster 5:41 /km → 3:59:48
Times assume the same pace all the way — water stops, hills and slowing down late are not included
