How English addresses work

Small to large, six shipping fields

A Korean address starts with the province and narrows down to the building number, while an English address runs the other way: the unit and building number come first, and the city and country go last. On a document you write it as one line in that order; on a form split into fields, like an overseas shop's checkout, the same information goes into the six fields below.

Field What goes in it
Address line 1 Road name and building number (e.g. 20, Teheran-ro 81-gil)
Address line 2 Where you are inside the building: building name, dong, unit, floor. Leave it empty if none
City City, county or district. Special and metropolitan cities such as Seoul and Busan, and Sejong, use the city name itself
State / Province Province (e.g. Gyeonggi-do). For special and metropolitan cities, repeat the City value
ZIP / Postal code Five-digit postal code (in use since August 2015)
Country Republic of Korea (country code KR)
Field names vary a little between sites, but the values stay the same

A building and unit can be written the Korea Post way, only romanized ("103-dong, 1502-ho"), or with English words ("Bldg 103, Unit 1502"). The last leg of delivery is handled by Korean couriers and Korea Post, so the Korean style that matches the mailbox labels leaves less room for confusion. Turn on the Bldg · Unit prefix only when a foreign form expects the Western style.

Official English address API of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety

Road names, building numbers, districts, provinces and postal codes come from the English address search API (addrEngApi.do) of the Road Name Address system (juso.go.kr) run by Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Safety. Instead of guessing the pronunciation like a translator, the tool shows the official English form the government has registered for each address.

When you search, your browser calls this site's server, which adds its issued API key and sends a lookup request to the ministry. The key is never exposed to your browser, and the search term is used only for the lookup and is not stored. If a renamed district returns no results, the tool searches once more with only the road name and building number.

Details such as the building name, dong and unit are not covered by the official API, so they are converted in your browser using the letter mapping of the Revised Romanization of Korean (2000) from the National Institute of Korean Language. This simple mapping does not apply sound changes such as liaison, so if an apartment or building has an official English name, that name is more accurate.
