Coordinates to Korean Address

Enter a latitude and longitude to get the Korean road-name address, lot-number address, building number and postal code at that point. Reads decimal degrees and DMS, splits a pasted pair, and shows the spot on a map.

How coordinates are written

Latitude, longitude, decimal and DMS

Latitude is the angle north or south of the equator, and longitude the angle east or west of the prime meridian through Greenwich. South Korea sits at roughly 33–39° N and 124–132° E, so its latitudes are in the 30s and its longitudes in the 120s. The same spot can be written several ways, and all of the formats below are read as the same value.

Decimal 37.5665, 126.9780 The most common format in map apps and GPS devices. Four decimal places is about 11 m of precision
DMS 37°33′59″N Used in photo metadata (EXIF) and survey data; one degree is 60 minutes and one minute is 60 seconds
Korean DMS 37도 33분 59초 Degrees, minutes and seconds written with Korean characters are read the same way
South (S), West (W) or a leading minus sign is read as a negative value

Coordinates copied from map apps are usually "latitude, longitude", but GIS software and some APIs write "longitude, latitude". When the order is clearly reversed, such as a value in the 120s in the latitude box, the two values are swapped when you search and a note appears under the boxes.

Data source

Kakao Local API, coordinates to address

Road-name addresses, lot-number addresses, building numbers and postal codes come from the "coordinates to address" endpoint (coord2address) of Kakao's Local API. It finds the land parcel the point falls on and returns that parcel's address, so land with no building may return only a lot-number address.

When you search, your browser calls this site's server, which adds its issued key and sends a lookup request to Kakao. The key is never exposed to your browser, and neither the coordinates nor the address found are stored on the server. Coordinates outside Korea are rejected right away without asking the server.

The map under the result is drawn with the Kakao Maps JavaScript SDK, which loads only when the first result appears so it does not slow down the page.

How to use

1.

Enter the coordinates in the latitude and longitude boxes. Paste a pair like "37.5665, 126.9780" into one box and it is split into both.

2.

Degrees-minutes-seconds (37°33′58″) work too, and if latitude and longitude are swapped they are read the right way round when you search.

3.

Click "Find address" or press Enter. No coordinates? Try the Seoul City Hall, Busan Station or Jeju Airport example.

4.

Check the road-name address and the map, then take what you need with "Copy address" or "Copy table".
