Paper sizes and image quality

Fit to photo, A4, Letter

Each PDF page is like a sheet of paper, so you first decide what size of sheet a photo goes on and how. This tool never changes a photo’s ratio: it centres the photo at the largest size that fits inside the paper and margin you pick. When the paper and the photo have different ratios, white bands remain at the top and bottom or on the sides.

Fit to photo Each page is cut to its photo’s own ratio, so no white bands appear. Good for portfolios and scanned pages read on screen Long side 297 mm
A4 The standard copy paper in Korea, Europe and most of the world. The safe choice for a PDF you will print or submit 210 × 297 mm
Letter The standard paper in the US and Canada, a little wider and shorter than A4. Use it for documents going to North America 215.9 × 279.4 mm
Auto orientation turns only the pages that hold a wide photo to landscape

Photos up to 4000 pixels on the long side are used as they are; larger ones are scaled to 4000 pixels, then placed in the PDF as JPG at 92% quality. Printing an A4 page at 300 dpi needs only about 3500 pixels, so the loss is not visible on paper. Transparent parts of a PNG are filled with white, and the orientation tag (EXIF) in phone photos is applied so pages look the way they do on screen.
