What average pace means

Elapsed time ÷ distance

Average pace is your total elapsed time divided by the distance. Even if the run mixed fast and slow stretches, the result is the time per km you would have run at one steady speed from start to finish. That makes it a handy yardstick for comparing today's run with other days or other distances.

Average pace Divide elapsed time by the distance run 10km 50:00 → 5:00 /km
Distance times Multiply the average pace by each distance. The middle column is your pace, with paces 10 and 20 seconds slower or faster on either side 5:00 /km → half 1:45:29
Track laps One lap of the inside lane on a standard track is 400 m, so the distance is divided by 0.4 km 5km → 12.5 laps
m and yd units For short distances, pace is shown per 100 m (or 100 yd) instead of per km 5:00 /km → 0:30 /100m
